One issue we all face at times, some more than others, is motivation. How do we emerge from the grey cloud that blocks the sun’s nurturing warmth?

I’ve been leading teams for over 20 years, and while my job is to ensure the work gets done, I’m an empathetic person and genuinely care about my team. Even the most problematic team members often struggle because they don’t have anyone to listen to them.

Motivation is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, especially with so many things vying for our attention: the job market, wars, AI, climate change. It feels as if we never get a break and need to be on high alert at all times.

It’s not just about the next thing anymore; it’s about the wave of new challenges that haven’t even arrived yet.

Take the phone market as an example. Decades ago, a home phone would sit in one place and be used for years. Now, our mobile phones, which solved the mobility issue, offer countless features, and yet we all hunch over them, bending our backs and necks to serve them, and the need to change them every year is becoming ridiculous.

We’re constantly busy.

But what if this is just a battle for our attention? There’s money to be made from our focus, and the more someone monopolises it, the greater their chance to profit. As a result, personal time becomes scarce.

We tend to reprioritise when something serious knocks at our door. But we shouldn’t wait for such moments to get a glimpse of what we should be doing with our lives.

You should be exploring, testing yourself, seeing what you can achieve, and creating opportunities to find yourself truly. Instead, it’s much easier to sit on the sofa and indulge in “what if” fantasies: “What if I were rich?”, “What if I went for a run now?”, “What if I spent more time with my family?”

Often, it’s our own fears that prevent us from doing these things—things that would improve our lives. Instead, we fear that work needs us, that we must attend that call, or that we can’t miss that boring meeting which saps our energy.

It takes mental strength to say, “Stop.” To focus on what truly matters. To plan for the future—what do you want to achieve in the next five years?

We’ve become addicted to immediacy. We want things to happen now. Do you want to be a DevOps engineer in six weeks, earn six figures, and work remotely with the latest gadgets? We’ve become materialistic, believing that acquiring things is what makes us happy.

But the goal isn’t money for the sake of it—it’s to create opportunities for meaningful experiences, not to flaunt a lifestyle.

Wouldn’t be great to spend six months trying to understand SEO and Marketing to realise that after those six months you have gained enough knowledge to explain it ti people or even better to help them and even setup a business around it? Spend 3 or 5 years learning how to program, to one day have enough proficiency to develop apps to people, companies to solve their problems and be paid for it? What is stopping you from using your skills to help other people?

It’s all about priorities. Sometimes we need to talk to someone, to be heard, to rework our story, or to find the motivation to write the next chapter.

It’s hard, and it takes time. But time isn’t the enemy. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to savour those moments; everything would happen at once, leaving you confused and unmotivated.
